Hard to believe we started with a vending cart fashioned from a sink cabinet back in 1992! I sold packaged smoked salmon to tourists at the corner of 5th and F Streets downtown. I moved my cart into the airport in 1993, and with the help of the DOT DBE program, expanded from there! I will always be thankful for the support and guidance I received from counselors at the UAA Small Business Development Center…and my Mom and Dad, who frequently came by to staff the booth so I could take quick breaks! (Oh, and thanks to my many friends who would fill in for a few minutes on their way out of town on a flight!)
We are so proud of our five gorgeous gift shops at the Ted Stevens International Airport. We represent over 100 Alaska based artists and crafters as well as unique goods from around the globe. Our selection ranges from berry candies to fossilized walrus ivory carvings, so you are bound to find something you cannot live without!
Deborah Bonito has been an Alaska business owner since 1992 and active in the Alaska political scene in public service since high school (if you count student government at Bartlett-Begich High School). Married to Mark Begich, former Alaska State Senator, she also served as the chair of the state Democratic Party. She is the mom of Jacob, and she and her family are tireless advocates for military families in memory of her father who served in the U.S. Army.
